King, Jones to Run for Sri Lanka Peace Movement
~~~ June 12, 2009 - Orlando, FL
The Premier Basketball League (PBL) has agreed to
sponsor Mark King, Co-Founder and President of the
Florida Flight, and Flight guard Ernest Jones in a 5K race
for peace and reconciliation for the country
of Sri Lanka on June 13th, 2009.
The event is being hosted by Northland, A Church
Distributed and Sri Lanka Unites, a non-profit organization
with a vision to unite the youth of all ethnic and religious
groups across Sri Lanka.
In May of 2009, Sri Lanka declared the end of a 26-year
Civil War. The goal of the race is to raise awareness for
the current situation in Sri Lanka and the emerging
peaceful youth movement. All funds raised will go towards sponsoring top high school students of Sri
Lanka to attend a week-long conference promoting peaceful reconciliation initiatives.
King, whose wife is a native of Sri Lanka, felt challenged to raise awareness within his own circle of
influence. He recently launched The Florida Flight, an aspiring minor league professional basketball
team with a mission to utilize the game of basketball to invest in the lives of others. He is actively
seeking membership in the Premier Basketball League (PBL) for the 2011 season.
For the PBL, this is yet another step in promoting the league’s global vision and social responsibility
through the game of basketball. This past week, the Buffalo Stampede of the PBL held a “Knock-Out
for Cancer” promotion, where over two hundred contestants played the game of “Knock-Out” to raise
money for the American Cancer Society. Additionally, five other PBL teams also announced official
dates for their respective youth camps and clinics.
“Based on the activities that I see from the PBL both on and off the court, and their global business
perspective, which is clearly evident by their activities in China as well as the pledged support for this
5K run for peace in Sri Lanka, there’s not a better professional basketball league for the Flight to
seek membership from.” said King.
In a move to bolster a global influence, the PBL rebroadcasted the 2009 PBL Championship game
between the Rochester RazorSharks and Battle Creek Knights on China's CSPN, the largest TV sports
channel broadcasting over a network in China on May 13, 2009.
“Economically speaking, the world is a lot smaller than it was 10 to 20 years ago. The PBL gets that,
and they understand the passion and excitement spreading in China for the game of basketball. It’s
simply an intelligent, innovative ideal, especially from a minor league basketball perspective."
The Florida Flight, hoping to become the first league-based Christian professional basketball team, has
not officially been accepted into the PBL, but King remains hopeful.
“As with any business, there are some fiscal requirements we need in place to make it a reality, but
the response thus far for a team of this nature here in Central Florida has been promising!” King
declared. "Hopefully, the PBL leadership gives the Florida Flight the opportunity to represent the PBL
in Central Florida."
Although the Florida Flight is currently in the embryonic stages of development, it hasn’t stopped the
team from pushing forward to create a buzz in the community.
“We don’t need to be in a league to start executing our mission,” said King. “We want to start making
a difference so people will know, before we even play our first game, that we are serious about creating
something deeper than a basketball team. We’re going to keep our motives pure, and wait and see
how God works this all out!”
King also garnered a sponsorship from Larsen & Associates, P.A., a local law firm located in downtown
Orlando, FL, for the event.
The race, titled The 5K Race for Reconciliation, will take place Saturday, June 13th, 2009. The course
will begin and end at Northland Church, located at 530 Dog Track Rd in Longwood, Florida.
